Ahh, Colorado... a place where it snows in March, the place with the most history but… how did we get here? Well, come on a journey through the history of how people came to Colorado and made history.
Chapter 1: What Time Is It?
Back in the 1800’s the US government was giving out free land and the USA was still growing, but the only way to get to that land was a wagon train. The wagon train became popular in the 1850’s and thousands went west. It took 5 months to get there because they only traveled 12-20 miles a day. They found new places on the trail, but they had to survive storms, mountains, heat, cold, wild animals, disease, attacks from Indians, and starvation. One out of ten people died on the trip.
Chapter 2: Who Would Do That?
People who came to Colorado were farmers, miners, fur trappers, regular people, pioneers, settlers, and emigrants to either farm, mine, fur trap, get free land, or to have a better life. So some people ended up in Utah, Oregon, New Mexico, California, or Colorado.
Chapter 3: What In The World?
A train wagon is a group of wagons that had a captain (they did this because hardships). The wagons were 10 feet long and 4 feet wide so they had no room. They had a cover made of canvas. They had oxen, mules or horses that pulled the wagon. (Oxen carried the most weight.) Wagon trains carried the sick and injured. They also carried house items, such as couches, beds, chairs, pretty much anything the family wanted to bring. Families argued about what to take. It was a fight between want and need. Wagon trains would almost never carry regular people including moms, dads, kids, neighbors, teens, anyone but old people, babies and the sick. They even slept in tents. Wagons were used to travel west for the Homestead Act. In water the wagons were called prairie schooners. They were popular in the 1950’s and they were replaced by trains.
Well that was a fun journey through time. Now you know about wagon trains and why people moved to Colorado.
