Colorado Inventions
Chapter 1-Where Were “Teddy Bears” Invented?
Actually they were invented in Colorado! In 1905 at the Hotel Colorado, maids took scraps from sheets and blankets they put them together. It was a stuffed bear. Who was the bear for? The president! President Theodore Roosevelt had gone on a hunting trip, and he had refused to shoot a bear in a tree. The stuffed bear was a little ragged, but it would please Roosevelt. The maids presented the bear to the president and he liked it. Very soon after the stuffed bears were named the “Teddy bear”.

Chapter 2-Root Beer floats
Many people credit Frank J. Wisner for inventing the root beer float in Cripple Creek, Colorado, on August 6, 1893. He owned the Cow Mountain Gold Mining Company. The snow on the mountain reminded him of ice cream in a dark drink. He went inside and grabbed his kids favorite drink, Myers Avenue Red Root Beer. He put some ice cream in the the drink and took a sip. He liked it! Frank started selling the beverage the next day. It was a huge hit! He named the drink Black Cow Mountain, and locals shortened the name to Black Cow. Now every year on August 6th, it is National Root Beer Float Day.

Chapter 3-Crocs The Comfortable Shoes
Have you ever slipped in and out of those shoes with a crocodile as the company logo? Well guess what, they were invented in Colorado as well! On a boating trip in the Caribbean, (three friends Scott Seamans, Lyndon Hanson, George Boedecker Jr.) were marveled by Scott's shoes. The type he was wearing were made by a Canadian company named Foam Creations. Crocs were originally made for boating and gardening, some types were even made dishwasher proof. Holes on the side allow air and water to pass through easily and eliminate odors. The reason people like the shoes is because they are springy and light. In fact, they only weigh six ounces and have “a marshmallow fluffiness!” The Croc was first made in 2002, but it had no name. But this is how they found a name ... if you look at a Croc from the side, it is shaped like the snout of a crocodile.
