Did that give you an idea what you are going to learn?” Who Was William Bent? Chapter 1 William Bent who is he a trader or trapper? William Bent was a trader and a trapper. William Bent built bent’s fort he was born in 1809 he died in 1869 from Pneumonia on his ranch in southeast Colorado. William Bent married 4 women and 3 of them were Indians (insinuate that cool) 1st Owl Woman (Indian), 2nd Yellow Women (Indian and sister of Owl Women), 3rd Island (Indian), and Adalina Harvey ( not an Indian). It was sad when the Sand Creek Massacre came because people who wanted to kill the Indians held William back when they killed them because they knew William would tell them that they were coming and they would run away so they would not kill them and the sad part is that Bent’s kids were there and they died when the white people came. William was devastated. William would trap beaver to trade because beaver hats were very popular and he would get good stuff in return. William out of the corners middle name was Wells so his full name is William Wells Bent. William Bent in 1840 became a sub chief and a Indian Resident. What is Bent’s Fort? Chapter 2 “What is Bent’s Fort?” Bent’s Fort is a fort built by William Bent and he named it after himself. The fort was for the Pueblo Indians mostly. Bent’s Fort has 799 acres of land. Bent’s Fort was built on the northern “ Mountain Range” of the Santa Fe Trail, by then open for business. It was like a castle to some people. Bent’s fort was a hospital and a base for the US when the Mexican war broke out. Bent’s fort gave a lot of service to people who came there.The Bent’s traded with Mexico. Bent’s fort was hard to burn down so it was easy to defeat people.Going to Bent’s fort is an adventure. Lots of people at bent’s fort spoke different languages. It was built out of soil, grass, cotton, and water. Where Was Bent’s Fort? Bent’s Fort today is located at Otero County, Colorado, USA.When Was It Bent’s Fort Built? Chapter 4 “Bent’s Fort I don’t know when.” “No I don’t ask the author.” ” Well all you had to do is ask” Bent’s 1st Fort was finished in 1834 and abandoned and destroyed in 1849 no one knows how it was destroyed though. William hired Mexican men to build Bent’s fort with adobe brick because they knew how to and he didn’t. It was built again in 1976 after being burned to the ground by someone or something but we don’t know. Why Was Bent’s Fort Important? Chapter 5 Bent’s Fort was a trading center for the Indians to trade with the white men sometimes and sometimes with other Indians that are from other tribes. Bent’s Fort became an important trading center in southern Colorado. Bent’s Fort was a permanent trading post. The construction could accommodate 200 people. The fort though people to be friends with indians. It tried to keep people together. They traded buffalo hides to make good stuff. Indians started to be independent on the english people.
