“Go west... go west... go west... young man to Colorado where fortune greets and you find fame go west... go west...” That’s right, go west! It’s 1800 and lots of people are packing up. They are moving to the west! The war is over and there are more opportunities. The long journey begins. The ones who are going west are the PIONEERS! They are daring and ready to explore and get rich.
Why Did They Come Out West?
Pioneers were like explorers. You probably think I’m wrong, but they were like ones. They were the ones who came out here, having no clue what it would be like. They came out here for a new life and they got it. They came out west for new work or love. Some bought mines and they tried to strike it rich. Some bought farms and would sell their crops for money. Then some of them just needed a new life. They started to build school and more homes. Soon there were little towns everywhere.
Where Did They Travel To ... Was It Just Colorado ?
Well, Colorado wasn’t the only place pioneers went. They traveled to many different place like California and Alaska. The long journey was rough and difficult. They crossed rivers, long mountain ranges, hot deserts, and wet marshes. Also there were no weather trackers in the 1800’s, so they had no idea if it would be hot, cold, rainy, no one knew. But there was more! They had to travel by covered wagon. It took months to get to where they wanted to go. But today it takes like an hour to get to where we want to go.
When Did They Come Out West?
the pioneers came out west in the early 1800’s to the middle of the 1900’s. After the Civil War, people left the east and came to the west for new opportunities. The thing was the southerners didn’t like the idea of moving to the west. If the north hadn't won the war there would not have been any pioneers. They came from all over the east. They had to adapt to doing chores
What Was The Journey Like?
The journey for the pioneers was long, it could take five months to a year to get from the east to the west. Some got sick and died. Some were so tired they turned back and some were just left behind. The journey was long, difficult, rough, and dangerous. They could be attacked by Indians. That was a huge problem. Some of the oxen got tired and were left behind. Imagine that! What if that was you?
Pioneer
You have read that the pioneer is daring and strong, ready to explore, get rich, and go west. The pioneers tamed the wild west. They are brave and kind (well most of them.) They looked for new opportunities and they found them. They were the good and the bad…. they were the WEST!
Author Notes
The pioneers were pretty cool right. Some of the thing we used today were made or discovered by them. They are our history. Maybe you are related to a pioneer. Pioneers was such a fun thing to learn about and study. I hope I inspired you. And who knows maybe you will do what I did and learn more about your states history.
