The Sand Creek Massacre was an unfair massacre or slaughter between white soldiers and Cheyenne and Arapaho Native Americans. 700 members of the Colorado militia led by Colonel Chivington attacked a peaceful indian camp. Indian women, children and men were murdered in the attack. Indians were running away from them but the soldiers chased and killed them.

The attack began at sun rise and ended around 10 o’clock AM to 11 o’clock AM as stated by John Smith. This occurred during The Colorado Gold Rush which brought many pioneers to Colorado which began the conflicts between pioneers and Indians.
Why did The Sand Creek Massacre Happen?
White people at the time were afraid of Indians. Indians had attacked pioneers since they were taking their lands. Several peaceful arrangements were made, however, white men didn’t keep their word. The Sand Creek Massacre was another example of white men not keeping their word. It was unfair. Indians were living peacefully. However, white people were still afraid of them. Therefore the white people thought that they would be safer if all the Indians were dead. They attacked and killed the Indians living at Sand Creek.
